United States Consulate General in Belfast

Consulate of USA in Belfast, United Kingdom

Overview

The U.S. Consulate General in Belfast is the U.S. diplomatic post for Northern Ireland. The Consulate General does not process U.S. visa applications — all U.S. visa interviews for residents of the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland) are centralised at U.S. Embassy London — but it provides the full range of American Citizen Services for U.S. citizens resident or travelling in Northern Ireland and supports U.S. commercial and cultural engagement with the region. Northern Ireland's resident U.S. community spans several distinct populations: the substantial Northern Irish-American dual-national community whose family ties to the United States are mediated through the Irish-American diaspora more broadly (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and the wider U.S. industrial-Catholic-Protestant Irish community); U.S. corporate personnel in the technology and aerospace sectors clustered around Belfast (Spirit AeroSystems on the historic Bombardier site, the wider Belfast aerospace supply chain, the Allstate, Citi and software-services back-offices in Belfast and Derry/Londonderry, plus the rapidly growing Belfast cybersecurity and FinTech cluster); the academic and research community at Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University; and U.S. visitors drawn to the Game of Thrones filming-location tourism, the Causeway Coast and the historical Belfast tourism economy. Routine ACS workload covers passport renewals and replacements, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad for U.S.-citizen children born in Northern Ireland, notarial services, federal-benefits documentation including Social Security and Veterans Affairs paperwork, federal voting under UOCAVA, and emergency assistance for U.S. citizens involved in arrest, hospitalisation, welfare-and-whereabouts cases or fatalities in Northern Ireland. The Consulate General is at Danesfort House, 223 Stranmillis Road, on the south side of central Belfast near the Stranmillis College and Queen's University Belfast precinct. Access is controlled and the consulate operates Monday to Friday during published business hours, by appointment only.

Routine ACS workload covers passport renewals and replacements, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad for U.S.-citizen children born in Northern Ireland, notarial services, Social Security and Veterans Affairs documentation, federal voting under UOCAVA, and emergency assistance for U.S. citizens involved in arrest, hospitalisation, welfare-and-whereabouts cases or fatalities. Trade & Export Support

The Consulate General supports U.S. commercial engagement with Northern Ireland in the sectors that map to the Northern Ireland economy: aerospace and advanced manufacturing (the Belfast cluster centred on Spirit AeroSystems and its supply chain), software services and cybersecurity (the Belfast and Derry/Londonderry tech clusters), FinTech and back-office financial services, agri-food (the Northern Ireland dairy, beef and processed-foods sectors), pharmaceuticals and life sciences, and tourism and hospitality. The Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Invest Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Bureau in Washington are the standard counterparts.

Investment Opportunities

U.S. investor focus in Northern Ireland centres on advanced manufacturing and aerospace, software services and cybersecurity (the Belfast and Derry/Londonderry tech clusters with Allstate, Citi, FinTech and a growing cybersecurity ecosystem anchored by the Centre for Secure Information Technologies at Queen's University Belfast), agri-food, life sciences and tourism. The Consulate supports SelectUSA programming for Northern Ireland firms looking at U.S. investment, in coordination with the New York-headquartered Northern Ireland Bureau and the U.S.-NI investment promotion network.

Business Support

The Consulate General supports U.S. firms operating in or expanding into Northern Ireland — market intelligence, trade-mission programming and partner-matching, in coordination with the U.S. Commercial Service team at U.S. Embassy London. The post engages with Invest Northern Ireland on inbound investment promotion and with the U.S.-Northern Ireland economic corridor that includes the Belfast Region City Deal and the Derry/Londonderry-Strabane City Deal pipelines.

Cultural & Educational Programs

The Consulate General runs Northern Ireland-specific cultural and educational programming, including support for the Fulbright programme's Northern Ireland strand, EducationUSA advising for Northern Ireland applicants to U.S. universities (with Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University as the principal Northern Ireland-side counterparts), International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) cohorts, and the broader portfolio of Belfast-Boston/Philadelphia/Chicago people-to-people programming that has historically been a feature of the U.S. relationship with Northern Ireland.

Service Area

U.S. Consulate General Belfast serves the entire territory of Northern Ireland — Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, Lisburn, Newry, Bangor, Armagh, Enniskillen, Coleraine and the rest of the six counties — for American Citizen Services and U.S.-Northern Ireland commercial and cultural engagement. Visa processing for Northern Ireland residents is handled by U.S. Embassy London; Belfast does not process visa applications.

Appointment Information

Routine ACS services at Belfast are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance through the U.S. Mission's online scheduling system; walk-ins are not accepted for non-emergency work. Office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 local time, excluding U.S. and Northern Ireland public holidays. Electronic devices are restricted inside the consular section; applicants should follow the consulate's published access guidance and bring printed appointment confirmations. ACS emergency cases reach the duty officer through the consulate's main number; after-hours emergencies are handled via the State Department's Overseas Citizens Services line.

Special Notes

The pound sterling (GBP) is the local currency in Northern Ireland; the Republic of Ireland to the south uses the euro (EUR), and cross-border travel between Belfast and Dublin (the Belfast-Dublin Enterprise rail corridor and the M1/A1 motorway) is a normal feature of life in Northern Ireland. ATM and contactless card payment are universal, and Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay are integrated with British banking apps. Belfast International (BFS) and Belfast City (BHD) airports operate substantial routes within the British Isles and to Europe; long-haul U.S. service from Belfast is intermittent, and most travellers transfer through London Heathrow, Dublin or Manchester. English is the working language. The consulate at Danesfort House, 223 Stranmillis Road is on the south side of central Belfast in the Queen's University and Stranmillis quarter, accessible by bus from the city centre and by the Botanic and Adelaide rail stations.
