Overview
Japanese applicants for UK visas — Visit, Student, Skilled Worker, Family — submit biometrics and documents at the VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre in Tokyo, with decisions issued by UK Visas and Immigration in Sheffield. The flow is steady across categories, with Student a recurring share of volume given the long Japan-UK university relationship described under Cultural Education below. The British Embassy at No 1 Ichiban-cho in Chiyoda, central Tokyo, supports the visa work and provides consular services for British nationals across Japan, including the substantial community working in the eikaiwa English-language school system, creative industries, finance and academic research. The British Consulate-General in Osaka covers western Japan. Tourist destinations are widely distributed — Tokyo's Shibuya, Asakusa and Akihabara, Kyoto's temples, Mount Fuji and the Five Lakes, the Japanese Alps, Hokkaido — connected by the Shinkansen network. In-person services by appointment via the FCDO website.
Cultural & Educational Programs
Japan's relationship with British higher education runs deep: Japanese students have been a steady presence at UK universities for decades, with Chevening scholarships and a wide field of Anglo-Japanese academic partnerships shaping the pipeline. British Council Japan operates from Tokyo with IELTS sessions, English-language courses and a year-round cultural/education programme that is the practical first stop for many of those students. Particularly visible alumni concentrations: arts and design via RCA, UAL and the Glasgow School of Art; marine sciences and engineering via Edinburgh, Southampton and Imperial.
