Overview
The Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin (Königlich Thailändische Botschaft) occupies a residential villa on Lepsiusstrasse in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, a quiet diplomatic neighbourhood near the Berlin Botanical Garden and Dahlem campus. Germany is Thailand's largest trading partner in Europe and the single most important European source market for tourism: roughly 800,000 German visitors travel to Thailand annually, making Germans the largest European nationality in Thai arrival statistics and a core audience for the beach resorts of Phuket, Koh Samui, and Krabi as well as the cultural circuits of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the northern highlands. The relationship runs both ways — an estimated 60,000 Thai nationals live in Germany, concentrated in Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, and the Rhine-Ruhr region, forming one of the largest Thai communities in Europe. The embassy coordinates diplomatic affairs for all of Germany while consular services are shared across three missions: the embassy's own consular section in Berlin (serving northern and eastern Germany), the Consulate-General in Frankfurt (central and western Germany), and the Consulate-General in Munich (Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg). Thailand also maintains a Thai Trade Centre in Frankfurt, a Defence Attaché office in Berlin, and an Office of Educational Affairs that supports the approximately 6,000 Thai students enrolled in German universities. Visa Services
German citizens can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days for tourism and business. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is mandatory since May 1, 2025 and must be completed online before travel. For longer stays (work, study, retirement, digital nomad), all visa applications must be submitted exclusively through the Thai E-Visa system at thaievisa.go.th — in-person and postal applications are no longer accepted. Processing takes up to 15 working days from submission and payment. Applicants must be physically present in Germany when applying. Jurisdictional coverage: residents of Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, and Schleswig-Holstein apply through the Berlin embassy. Residents of Hesse, NRW, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and Thuringia apply through the Frankfurt consulate. Residents of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg apply through the Munich consulate. Consular Services
The consular section provides services for Thai nationals in Germany including passport renewals and issuance, Thai national ID card services, civil registration (birth, marriage, divorce, death certificates), document legalisation and notarial acts, power of attorney, and emergency assistance for Thai citizens in distress. Additional services include free legal consultation, certified Thai translator referrals, and customs information for personal belongings and vehicles. The consular section also facilitates Thai driving licence applications and military service deferral documentation. Non-EU citizens must provide both sides of their residence card for all applications. The embassy periodically conducts mobile consular services (konsularische Außenstelle) in cities across northern Germany to serve Thai communities who cannot easily travel to Berlin. Germany is Thailand's largest European trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding EUR 12 billion annually. German exports to Thailand centre on machinery, automotive components, chemical products, and precision instruments. Thai exports to Germany include electronics and electrical components, rubber and rubber products, processed food (particularly canned seafood and tropical fruits), jewellery, and automotive parts manufactured in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor. Over 600 German companies operate in Thailand — concentrated in the automotive sector (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Bosch all maintain production facilities), industrial machinery, chemicals, and renewable energy. The Thai-German Chamber of Commerce, headquartered in Bangkok, facilitates business networking and market entry for German SMEs expanding into Southeast Asia.
Business Support
The embassy supports German businesses exploring the Thai market through referrals to the Thai-German Chamber of Commerce, the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development office. Germany is one of the largest European investors in Thailand, with particular strength in automotive manufacturing, industrial automation, food processing technology, and renewable energy. The embassy assists with trade delegation coordination, investment inquiries, and bilateral business matchmaking events held in both Berlin and Bangkok.
Cultural & Educational Programs
Thailand and Germany maintain robust cultural and educational ties. Approximately 6,000 Thai students study at German universities — a figure supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarships and partnerships between Thai and German institutions. The Goethe-Institut Bangkok promotes German language and culture in Thailand, while Thai cultural events in Berlin (Songkran water festival, Loi Krathong lantern celebrations, and Thai cooking workshops) draw significant public interest. Thai boxing (Muay Thai) has a large following in Germany with hundreds of training gyms across the country. Appointment Information
Consular section open Monday to Friday 09:00-13:00 (applications accepted until 12:30). Phone inquiries in the afternoon 14:00-17:00. All visa applications must be submitted online only via thaievisa.go.th. The general embassy office operates 09:00-17:00 on weekdays. The embassy is closed on Thai public holidays and German public holidays — a combined holiday calendar is published on the embassy website at the start of each year.
Special Notes
The embassy is located in a residential area of Steglitz-Zehlendorf — visitors arriving by public transport should use U-Bahn line U3 to Breitenbachplatz station (5-minute walk) or bus lines M48/M85. On-street parking is available but limited. Thai nationals requiring emergency consular assistance outside office hours can reach the duty officer at the general embassy number. The embassy building is not fully wheelchair accessible — visitors with mobility needs should contact the embassy in advance to arrange assistance.
