German Embassy in Windhoek

Embassy of Germany in Windhoek, Namibia

Overview

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Windhoek runs Germany's diplomatic, consular and visa work in Namibia from the sixth floor of the Sanlam Centre on Independence Avenue. For Namibian residents heading to Germany the embassy is the Schengen-visa decision authority; for German citizens in Namibia it is the point of contact for passports, emergency travel documents, civil-status registrations and crisis assistance. The mission also coordinates Germany's substantial development-cooperation portfolio in Namibia and supports German trade, science and cultural exchange with the country.

Visa Services

The visa section processes Schengen visas (short stays up to 90 days) and national D-visas (longer-than-90-day stays for employment, study, family reunification, freelance work, research and other purposes) for Namibian residents and third-country nationals legally resident in Namibia. Applicants book a slot through RK-Termin on the embassy website, complete the VIDEX online application, and attend in person with the original passport, biometric photo, travel medical insurance covering at least €30 000 for the full schengen area, proof of accommodation, proof of funds and the purpose of travel (employer letter, study admission, family-reunification paperwork). The Schengen visa fee is paid in cash in Namibia Dollar or by card; processing usually runs 15 working days. The embassy does not process Namibian visas — those go through the Namibian Ministry's online portal — but it answers practical questions from German travellers about Namibian entry rules.

Consular Services

Consular services for German citizens in Namibia include passport applications and renewals (the embassy is the only point in southern Africa with full passport-issuing authority for Germany), national identity cards (eID/nPA), emergency travel documents (Reiseausweis als Passersatz) for lost or stolen passports, registration of births and marriages abroad, supporting documents for German civil-status events (Personenstandsfälle), apostille and notarial services, and ELEFAND registration for German nationals living in or extensively travelling Namibia. Appointments are scheduled online; consular emergencies (death, accident, hospitalisation, arrest) are handled outside business hours on the emergency number.

Trade & Export Support

The economic and commercial section supports German companies in the Namibian market — currently most active in green hydrogen (the Hyphen project at Lüderitz is the largest single German-Namibian commercial engagement), renewable energy, logistics through the Walvis Bay corridor, mining and beneficiation, agriculture, and tourism — and Namibian exporters seeking entry into the German market. It works closely with AHK Southern Africa (the bi-national chamber of commerce based in Johannesburg), GTAI and the German African Business Association.

Investment Opportunities

Priority cooperation sectors mirror Germany's wider Africa strategy: green hydrogen and renewable power, sustainable resource management, transport infrastructure and logistics, sustainable agriculture, and skills development. The embassy provides referrals to KfW, DEG and BMZ on the public-finance side and orientates inbound German investors on the local regulatory environment.

Business Support

Practical support for German firms includes market briefings, introductions to Namibian government counterparts and chambers, advice on the regulatory environment (NEEEF, work-permit pipeline, repatriation of profits) and coordination with AHK Southern Africa for trade missions and delegation visits.

Cultural & Educational Programs

Germany supports a dense educational and cultural network in Namibia, reflecting the country's German-speaking minority, the long history of bilateral cooperation, and active university partnerships. The Goethe-Institut Namibia, German schools recognised by the Federal Office of Administration (Bundesverwaltungsamt) including the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS), the Polytechnic of Namibia–Germany science cooperation, the DAAD scholarship network and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and Hanns Seidel Stiftung representations are the main institutional anchors.

Service Area

Consular and diplomatic jurisdiction: the Republic of Namibia. The Federal Foreign Office's ELEFAND crisis-registration system covers all German nationals in country regardless of length of stay.

Appointment Information

Visa and consular appointments are booked exclusively through the embassy's online RK-Termin system. Walk-in services are not offered. Standard appointment lead times: passport renewal 2–3 weeks; Schengen visa interview 2–6 weeks depending on season (longer in October–December when the southern-hemisphere holiday season drives applications).

Special Notes

The Sanlam Centre is in the heart of Windhoek at the junction of Independence Avenue and Werner List Street, two blocks from the Independence Memorial Museum and Zoo Park; the building has card-access security, so visitors check in with reception on the ground floor before going up. Visitors must present a valid photo ID. Bring originals and copies of every supporting document — the embassy returns originals at the desk. For travel within Namibia, German citizens are strongly encouraged to register with ELEFAND, which lets the Federal Foreign Office reach them quickly in a regional crisis.
