Overview
The German Embassy in Reykjavik is the diplomatic representation of the Federal Republic of Germany in Iceland, headed by Ambassador Her Excellency Clarissa Duvigneau. The embassy is located on Laufásvegur 31, one of central Reykjavik's main streets, sharing the building with the British Embassy. Germany and Iceland are NATO allies with strong bilateral ties in trade, renewable energy, fisheries, Arctic research, and a substantial tourism connection — Germany is one of Iceland's largest source markets for visitors, with Icelandair and Lufthansa operating direct flights from Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Berlin to Keflavik year-round. The embassy also maintains honorary consuls in Akureyri and Ísafjörður to provide regional assistance outside the capital.
Visa Services
Iceland is a Schengen Area member, so Icelandic citizens travel to Germany visa-free with no time limit under EEA freedom of movement. For non-EEA nationals residing in Iceland who require a Schengen visa, the embassy processes applications and provides guidance on documentation requirements. National visa applications for long-term stays in Germany (work, study, family reunification) are also handled by the embassy.
Consular Services
The embassy provides a full range of consular services for German nationals in Iceland: passport and identity card applications, notarizations and legalizations, civil status registrations, and emergency assistance. Given the large number of German tourists visiting Iceland, the consular section also handles emergency travel documents and assistance for travellers in distress. Appointments are booked through the embassy's online system.
Trade & Export Support
Germany is one of Iceland's most important trade partners. The embassy promotes bilateral economic cooperation, particularly in renewable energy (German firms study Iceland's geothermal expertise), fisheries and seafood trade, technology, and tourism infrastructure. The German-Icelandic Chamber of Commerce supports businesses in both directions.
Cultural & Educational Programs
The embassy promotes German language and culture in Iceland through cultural events, academic exchange programmes, and cooperation with the University of Iceland's German studies department. The Goethe-Institut's programming in Iceland, film screenings, and music events maintain a visible German cultural presence in Reykjavik.
Service Area
The embassy covers the entire Republic of Iceland. Honorary consuls in Akureyri (northern Iceland) and Ísafjörður (Westfjords) provide local assistance in regions outside the capital area.
Appointment Information
Appointments for all visa and consular services must be booked online via the embassy's website. Walk-in services are not available.
