14 minutes to Shenzhen, 47 minutes to Guangzhou, overnight trains to Beijing, ferries to Macau and the Pearl River Delta — Hong Kong SAR is the gateway between China and the world.
Visa-free entry for most Western nationals (90-180 days), Hong Kong dollar, English as an official language, and common-law legal system — a distinctly accessible gateway to China.
Pushcart dim sum at Lin Heung, Michelin-starred char siu bao at Tim Ho Wan, dai pai dong typhoon-shelter crab, three-Michelin-starred Cantonese (T'ang Court, Lung King Heen) and the deepest international fine-dining scene in Asia.
UNESCO-listed Portuguese colonial heritage, Macanese fusion cuisine, and the world's largest casino district — all reachable in under an hour by ferry or bridge bus.
UNESCO volcanic rock formations in Sai Kung, car-free islands by ferry, walled villages, and seventy-five percent green coverage — the SAR beyond the skyline.
- •Hong Kong has SEPARATE immigration from mainland China AND from Macau. Entry to Hong Kong does NOT count as entry to either, and a mainland China visa does NOT cover Hong Kong. Check visa requirements for each jurisdiction separately.
- •Most Western passport holders enter Hong Kong visa-free: UK 180 days, EU/US/Canada/Australia/New Zealand/Switzerland 90 days. No advance application needed — just show your passport at immigration.
- •Currency is the Hong Kong dollar (HKD), not the Chinese yuan (RMB). The HKD is pegged to the USD at approximately 7.8:1. Foreign Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops — no Alipay-link friction as on the mainland. Apple Pay and Google Pay work at NFC terminals across the territory.
- •The Octopus card is Hong Kong's signature payment system: a rechargeable contactless card used on the MTR, all buses, the Star Ferry, the Peak Tram, taxis and many convenience stores and small shops. Get one at the airport (HK$50 deposit refundable on departure) — it's the most efficient way to move around. Apple Pay can also load Octopus directly on iPhones.
- •The high-speed rail from West Kowloon to Shenzhen Futian (14 min) and Guangzhou South (47 min) is the fastest way to the mainland. Joint immigration at West Kowloon clears both Hong Kong and mainland formalities in one terminal.
- •Ferries to Macau depart from the Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan (Central) and the China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui — journey roughly 55 minutes. Buses via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge from Tung Chung take approximately 40 minutes to Macau or Zhuhai.
- •English and Cantonese are both official languages. Street signs, menus, and public transport announcements are bilingual. Hong Kong is the most English-accessible destination in greater China.
- •Hong Kong drives on the LEFT (like Macau, unlike mainland China — a legacy of British administration). Pedestrians need to look RIGHT first when crossing roads.
- •Power outlets are British-style three-pin (Type G). Visitors from continental Europe and the US need an adapter; UK, Ireland and Hong Kong–familiar travellers do not.
- •Tipping: a 10% service charge is usually added to restaurant bills automatically; further tipping is appreciated but not expected. Taxis are not tipped (round up to the nearest dollar). Hotel porters and tour guides accept small tips.
- •Tap water is technically safe — Hong Kong meets WHO standards — but most residents and visitors drink bottled or filtered water. Hotels provide bottled water in rooms. Boiled water (in tea or soup) is universally trusted.
- •Mainland Chinese apps (Alipay mainland, WeChat Pay mainland) work in some tourist areas of Hong Kong but are NOT the default. The local versions Alipay HK and WeChat Pay HK are widely accepted alongside Octopus and credit cards. Wise, Revolut and similar travel cards work normally in ATMs.
- •Typhoon season runs June through September (with possible storms into October). When Signal 8 or above is hoisted, public transport stops, businesses close, and ferries are cancelled — check the Hong Kong Observatory before booking ferry transfers in this window.
