Overview

St. Pölten is the capital of Lower Austria — Austria's youngest state capital, named only in 1986 after Lower Austria separated administratively from Vienna. The compact baroque old town in the Traisen valley sits beside the modern Government Quarter (Regierungsviertel) of the 1990s, anchored by the Festspielhaus concert hall and the Klangturm sound tower.
